About 200,000 paediatric patients, mostly newborn babies and infants, are treated for hypotension in the US and Europe each year. The conditions associated with hypotension are typically life-threatening and patients often require urgent treatment. Dopamine Hydrochloride is an important drug for the treatment of low blood pressure in this population. Until May 2024 dopamine hydrochloride was only licensed for use in adults. It was supplied as a concentrated formulation and was utilised “off-label” in children requiring time consuming, typically manual preparation just prior to administration. The error-rates in the administration of contemporaneously prepared sterile injectable solutions in hospitals are between about 30 to 60%, with risk of non-sterility of up to 20% over the course of therapy. These problems are exacerbated when treating Neonates as they require tiny and consequently very precise and difficult-to-prepare doses, and newborns, particularly premature babies have less-than-robust immune systems. Neoatricon® is a pre-diluted, age-appropriate formulation. It is the only form of dopamine approved in Europe for children and infants. By eliminating the need to prepare the drug prior to infusion, the opportunities for errors in dosage to be made or for microbial ingress into the solution are greatly diminished.
