Gallery SBD International Women’s Day Event 25th February 2026

Yesterday’s Sandyford Business District‘s International Women’s Day event was an energising celebration of leadership and meaningful support.

Under the theme “Women Who Lead: The Power of Reciprocity and Support”, we heard honest, practical insights from an exceptional panel, expertly MC’d by RTE‘s Jacqui Hurley.
A huge thank you to Jacqui and our inspirational panelists whose insights, stories and reflections brought tremendous value to the discussion. The honesty, warmth and experience shared by all the speakers truly resonated with our audience, making the event both inspiring and memorable.
Thank you to our panelists…
Denise Cullen – CEO, Enterprise Solutions Inc.
Deputy Maeve O’Connell TD
Grace Hayes – EVP Technology, Mastercard Dublin
Hannah Tyrrell – Former Irish rugby player, Dublin footballer & teacher
Dr. Jennifer Okeke – Chairperson, National Women’s Council (NWC) of Ireland
Joan Kehoe – Founder & CEO, alchelyst & Chairperson, Kilmacud Crokes GAA Club
Khulile Vilakazi-Ofosu – Director, Risk & Compliance, Microsoft

Key takeaway? Reciprocity is not transactional - it’s transformational. Supporting, mentoring and amplifying others drives stronger careers, cultures and organisations.
The discussions also highlighted the need to properly recognise the often unseen mentorship and advocacy work women do - and to embed inclusion into systems, not leave it to goodwill!
International Women’s Day is both celebration and call to action:
Advocate. Sponsor. Amplify. Repeat.

Thank you to our event partners RBK Chartered Accountants and thanks also to Gerry Walsh for the use of the amazing Dynamic Space building in Stillorgan Business Park

A brilliant morning of insight, innovation, and inspiration at the final session in the Sandyford Business District Innovation Series 2025: AI in Business.

We were delighted to host a session on December 1st in collaboration with Microsoft at their Leopardstown campus, bringing together local businesses to explore how AI is reshaping the future of work, productivity, and growth.

Jonathan Eustace, SMC Lead at Microsoft, shared an excellent deep dive into Microsoft’s success framework for embracing AI and “Becoming Frontier.”
With over a decade of expertise in cloud transformation and enterprise software, Jonathan highlighted how AI can:
Enrich employee experiences, reinvent customer engagement, reshape business processes and bend the curve on innovation

He also outlined the five key drivers of AI value:
1. Organisation & Culture
2. Business Strategy
3. Applied AI Experience
4. AI Governance
5. Technology Strategy

We were also joined by John Mitchell, CEO and Head of Strategy at All human — an award-winning digital design, technology, and AI company recognised globally for its work.

John reminded us that AI is no longer experimental — it is foundational.
AI transforms data into decisions, augments (rather than replaces) the workforce, and businesses embracing it are already outperforming competitors.
He shared a clear, practical 10-step plan to operationalise AI:
1. Identify use cases
2. Set KPIs
3. Build a data strategy
4. Select the right tools
5. Upskill your team
6. Start small, then scale
7. Monitor and measure
8. Foster a culture of experimentation
9. Stay informed
10. Use partners — including universities and research institutions

Ger Corbett, CEO of SBD concluded the morning session by emphasising the importance of leveraging partners, particularly for SMEs. He highlighted SBD’s MOUs and collaborations with third-level institutions, including NovaUCD and Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, and encouraged attendees to reach out if they would like support or introductions to research and innovation partners.

A big thank you to our speakers, our partners at Microsoft, Victoria Keogh and her team and all who attended.

Abstract patterns and bold typography evoke themes of connectivity, diversity, and progress — reflecting the dynamic energy that defines The District.

This striking new mural, part of our ongoing placemaking programme for The District, not only enhances the local streetscape but also stands as a testament to the creative vision achieved through the collaboration between SBD and DLR — a shared expression of a vibrant, sustainable, and forward-thinking district.

Gallery SBD Work a Day in My Shoes Initiative: Killian’s Coffee

Last Thursday, Ger Corbett, CEO of Sandyford Business District worked a day in the shoes of Killian, owner of Killian’s Coffee. This kicked off the beginning of SBD’s ‘Work a Day in My Shoes’ initiative.

Killian’s Coffee is located right next to Aldi on Blackthorn Drive, and is open 7 days a week serving specialty coffee and tasty treats. They have also launched a delicious new lunch menu, with breakfast, frozen bowls, toasties, and their new street bowls, which they now make in-house.

Ger got to work, trained in by Killian and Rob and learned all about their coffee, from their bean supplier to what goes into making the perfect cup. He also helped out with the lunch rush by making toasties for customers and got to meet some of Killian’s lovely regulars.

Working side-by-side with the team allowed Ger to learn more about the challenges that the hospitality sector is facing, both generally and specific to Killian’s Coffee including:

  • Rising costs and tighter margins, and the difficulties around finding new suppliers.
  • Reduction in spending, as consumers see buying coffee as more of a ‘treat’ rather than an everyday activity.
  • Consumers have higher expectations around coffee, which means the standards of your products need to be high, requiring higher costs, more training, and better ingredients.
  • A big challenge is trying to get consumers on board with either visiting more regularly or spending more per visit.
  • There is a lack of access to internet services, which means Killian is required to use a 5g router which is expensive and unreliable, particularly affecting his card machine.
  • Also discussed was staining outside the shop and a desire for more additions to communal areas.

Ger and Killian also discussed ways in which SBD could support the coffee shop, with key opportunities including:

  • Improving brand and location awareness throughout The District outside of the immediate area.
  • Creating opportunities by connecting Killian’s Coffee with multinationals, other small businesses, and residential blocks.
  • Increasing their regular customer base.
  • Showcase Killian’s Coffee at SBD’s 2025 Culture Night event, which will have at least 450 people in attendance.
  • Promotion using SBD’s Digital Sign on Ballymoss Road as well as our ‘In The Loop’ Newsletter.
  • SBD can help solve the internet issue, by making contact with relevant stakeholders to develop a long-term solution.

Killian mentioned: ‘I’ve had had a couple of coffee shops before, but I’ve never had that sort of support system put in place where people are genuinely trying to help you out… having that sort of outlet for me is hugely beneficial… not every coffee shop in the country has anything like that’

Finally, Ger reflected on his day in Killian’s Coffee with his main takeaways being:

  • Killian knows his business inside and out, and delivers products of extremely high quality, with enthusiasm that has earned him a loyal customer base.
  • Companies in the hospitality sector are being faced with a combination of rising costs, lower spend from consumers, and higher expectations, so building a regular customer base is crucial.
  • SBD can help with this, by building brand awareness and connecting companies across The District, with support from events such as SBD’s Culture Night.
  • Practical issues can also be addressed, such as the internet services, staining, and additions to communal areas.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Killian for letting Ger work a day in his shoes, and for taking the time to discuss his experiences as a small business in the hospitality sector. His expertise and hospitality are truly unmatched. Check out the full video here, and learn more about Killian’s Coffee here.

Trade Mission to Morocco between Business Hubs Sandyford Business District and Casablanca Finance City

The resulting bi-lateral economic partnership promises benefits for both leading business districts for decades to come

Earlier this month, a delegation of representatives Sandyford Business District, along with Irish business leaders and officials from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council embarked on an historic trade mission to Casablanca Finance City (CFC) in Morocco. The mission laid the foundation for a promising bi-lateral economic partnership between the two leading business districts.

The mission aimed to explore the mutual benefits in strengthening bi-lateral collaboration, promoting international visibility of the business districts to talent and investors, and sharing learnings and best practices between districts for the benefit of their respective businesses, universities, investors and communities.

From the meeting, the CEOs of SBD and CFC recognised their strong alignment between the visions and objectives for the futures of the business districts. The mission culminated in a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed by CEOs Ger Corbett of SBD, and Said Ibrahimi of CFC, officially launching the economic partnership between the two rapidly expanding business hubs.

The Irish delegation consisted of

o An Cathaoirleach Jim O’Leary, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (DLRCC)

o Frank Curran, CEO, DLRCC

o John O’Toole, Head of Economic Development, DLRCC

o Ger Corbett, CEO, SBD

o Leo McBride, Founder, DCaaS Global

o Gavin Duffy, Director, RealSim

o JJ O’Hara, CEO, Future Cast

Mr Corbett pointed to the Fintech sector as an ever-growing sector which is leading in attracting investment, highlighting the recent acquisition of Irish fintech company CR2 by Moroccan group HPS. In addition, smart cities and the use of technology in urban modernisation represent promising areas for collaboration between Morocco and Ireland, alongside AgriTech, industry, construction and tourism.

Mr Corbett also highlighted the significance of CFC’s strategic positioning as a business hub, with a strong pool of qualified talent, a bilingual French and English speaking workforce, high levels of mathematics knowledge amongst the workforce, and privileged access to both African and European markets as strong assets that will underpin the bi-lateral economic partnership.

Mr Corbett stated: “Much like Sandyford Business District, Casablanca Finance City has a clear vision for ambitious economic development and growth over the coming decades. Morocco invests strongly in infrastructure, innovation and education, and I have no doubt that it will continue to build on the momentum of those investments to establish itself as a key trading player in the global economy.

Although Sandyford Business District and Casablanca Financial City are at different stages of development, our shared visions and values will enable us to learn core lessons from one another on how to ensure our business districts continue to attract investment, and to learn and build upon one another’s successes on infrastructural development. The Memorandum of Understanding signed last week lays the foundation for the strengthening of trade ties and lucrative academic and professional partnerships that will develop from future cooperation between our districts.”

Gallery Sandyford Business District calls for more transport and housing spend in budget

Sandyford Business District (SBD) has urged the Irish government to invest the €13 billion Apple windfall tax in essential infrastructure, particularly transport and housing, to enhance Ireland’s business environment. In its pre-budget submission, SBD emphasised the need to reduce business costs, promote long-term competitiveness through upskilling and innovation, and address inflationary pressures. With challenges such as rising inflation, labor shortages, changes in corporate tax, and the drive to lower carbon emissions, SBD highlighted the importance of sustainable transport (like extending MetroLink to Sandyford) and affordable housing to support economic growth and attract foreign direct investment (FDI). Ger Corbett, SBD’s CEO, warned that Ireland’s strong FDI record is at risk without significant infrastructure investment, and he views Budget 2025 as a critical opportunity to safeguard Ireland’s long-term competitiveness. Investing in infrastructure, he argued, will help businesses thrive and maintain Ireland’s reputation as a top destination for living, working, and conducting business.

Gallery SBD Wellness Week ‘24 - Talk on Lifestyle Medicine

As part of our Wellness Week ‘24 activities we hosted a free talk on Lifestyle Medicine with Dr. Gillian Dagg on Wednesday 15th May in HUB17

This was an overview lecture of ‘Lifestyle Medicine’ where some of the core principles of this evidence-based specialty are explored. It is a proactive approach to health care focusing on 6 pillars:
Some key take outs from the talk were…

  • Nutrition
  • Avoidance of substances of abuse
  • Stress
  • Physical activity
  • Sleep and
  • Relationships

Engaging in regular physical activity, such as walking or cycling, is paramount for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Pairing this with proper nutrition, stress management, healthy habits, and sufficient sleep forms the foundation of preventive medicine. Lifestyle Medicine serves as a powerful reminder that sustainable lifestyle choices hold the key to preventing chronic diseases and promoting longevity and overall well-being. By prioritising these elements, individuals can unlock their potential to live longer, healthier lives and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Gallery Former Mayor of Palo Alto visits Sandyford to explore twinning opportunities

On Monday, CEO of Sandyford Business District (SBID), Ger Corbett was delighted to welcome former mayor, and current councillor of Palo Alto, Patrick Burt to the district. Mr Burt was on an exploratory visit that focused on understanding the potential opportunities for the home of tech to twin with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area, which Sandyford Business District is part of.

Sandyford Business District shares numerous similarities with Palo Alto; Palo Alto is a bustling suburb in Santa Clara County, south of the city of San Francisco. It is adjacent to Stanford University and home to hundreds of Silicon Valley technology companies. SBID is Ireland’s largest business improvement district, located a short distance from Dublin City and within close proximity of University College Dublin (UCD). It is also the preferred location of many Fortune 500 companies whose European headquarters are based in the district.

Accompanied by CEO of DLRCC, Frank Curran and former-Cathaoirleach of the Council Cllr Mary Hanafin, Mr Burt toured Leopardstown Racecourse and was subsequently treated to some hospitality at the facility’s Penthouse Suite. Here he got the opportunity to meet with executives of SBID and got to hear from some of Ireland’s most inspiring leaders, to include former MD of Microsoft Ireland, Cathriona Hallahan, CEO of the Beacon Hospital, Michael Cullen, CEO of Leopardstown Racecourse, Tim Husbands and Leo McBride of Digital X. All four endorsed the District and the broader Council area, the work being done by SBID and why Sandyford is the priority choice for their business.

CEO of SBID, Ger Corbett said “A potential twinning of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area and Palo Alto is an exciting prospect for Sandyford. The district has undergone profound change in recent years which is testament to the vision shared by many custodians of our business community over decades. Their ambitions are only matched by SBID’s current objective to make Sandyford the best place to work, live and run a business in.

We are thrilled to have Patrick Burt join us so we could brief him on the enormous synergies between our respective areas, and also our points of difference, which would perfectly complement a collaboration.

The visit is testament to the hard work of the executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council who in collaboration with the board of SBID seeks to firmly mark the
presence of the district on the international map, as we seek to build a resilient future for the businesses in the area.”

Gallery Sandyford Business District CEO Ger Corbett speaking about green mobility at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona

Sandyford Business District CEO speaks about green mobility at key international conference

Ger Corbett, CEO of Sandyford Business District, Ireland’s largest business district spoke at the Smart City World Congress in Barcelona on November 15th, providing an Irish perspective to the event which has been bringing together leaders and innovators from cities from across the world for over a decade.

Mr Corbett presented SBD’s insights on the key area of promoting green mobility and Sandyford’s learnings from participation in the EU-funded Smart Cities Marketplace “Small Giants” Initiative.

Joining Mr Corbett at the panel discussion were Mr Leo Huberts, policy officer with the European Commission, and Tomaz Lanisek a representative from Kranj in Slovenia, a fellow participant locality in the programme, as well as speakers from the e-mobility industry, and the investment community involved in the initiative, represented by Ms Phoebe Smith of the Smart City Innovation Fund.

The EU “Small Giants” initiative has brought together a group of cities that are collaborating to drive sustained changes to mobility habits. The discussion addressed the needs, intentions, and benefits of working with smaller cities as well as the actions that investors, industry and institutions can take to support demand aggregation amongst cities and the value that can result from such initiatives.

The discussion was both timely and forward-looking, examining how the energy crisis could encourage people to move towards more sustainable modes of transport but also underlining the importance of setting the right incentives for the long-term.

Beyond the EU programme, Sandyford Business District has taken the lead in Ireland in promoting sustainable mobility in the Sandyford area; working with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to roll out eCargo bikes for local businesses, as well as hosting an Innovation Summit at Leopardstown Racecourse which showcased a range of eMobility options.

Commenting after the discussion, Mr Corbett said: “I was delighted to represent SBD at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona where I got an opportunity to discuss green mobility and the EU ‘Small Giants’ Initiative. SBID has benefitted from the support and expertise of many valuable partners across the EU and Ireland, and this has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase the innovation and leadership of the district’s businesses in embracing the future of transport.

Working with Government, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, our members and the network of Smart Cities and business districts, we have been able to make significant gains. Our ambitions are best encapsulated by our recent initiatives; such as the Green Charter under which we are pursuing the objective of becoming Ireland’s leading sustainable business district.

Being part of the Smart City Expo World Congress has given me an unrivalled opportunity to gain further insights for SBID to leverage in its sustainability activity,
while sharing best practice based on the district’s own experience.

SANDYFORD BUSINESS DISTRICT PARTNERS WITH BALLINA-BASED, MARY ROBINSON CENTRE, TO DRIVE SUSTAINABILITY IN THE DISTRICT

On the back of the partnership, the Association is set to launch a number of green initiatives targeted at making the district an increasingly sustainable place to live and work

The largest Business Improvement District (BID) in Ireland, Sandyford Business District, has today announced a partnership with Mayo-based centre for change, The Mary Robinson Centre, to empower and enable the district, its businesses and residents to become increasingly sustainable through a number of green-focused initiatives.

Aimed at helping companies to gain a clear understanding of the business case for climate action, and to help them to take stock of where they are on their sustainability journey, the Association through its partnership with The Mary Robinson Centre, hopes to see local businesses continue to build on their commitment to reducing their environmental impact.

In order to empower the local business community, SBD will introduce a number of initiatives. Key among them include;

The establishment of a Green Committee with overall responsibility for the strategic, sustainable development of the area

The introduction of a Green Charter aimed at getting businesses to pledge to undertake three initiatives, of their own choosing, which will make their business more sustainable

Allocation of “Biodiversity Champion” status where businesses pledge to work on projects that are fully sustainable and aligned to the objectives of the area

Creating solutions to decarbonise the district and prioritise multi-model sustainable transport options

Devising and implementing further bio-diversity projects, akin to Pocket Forest in the area

Driven by the Executive Committee’s desire to inspire more sustainable solutions for the business community, Sandyford Business District has a long-held record of introducing progressive initiatives aimed at solidifying its credentials, as a leading business district in Ireland. This newest strategic partnership with The Mary Robinson Centre, is testament to the foresight of the leadership of the district.

Ger Corbett, CEO of Sandyford Business District said:

“As part of our ambition to make the area a leading sustainability district, we are delighted to announce a strategic partnership with The Mary Robinson Centre to support our members to become more climate aware, and to help them to take steps to reduce their climate footprint.

Working with the Centre makes sense on a number of levels, as we endeavour to develop a green eco-system in Sandyford, that prioritises local action within The Mary Robinson best-practice framework.Driving sustainability initiatives in tandem with the stewardship of the Centre, Sandyford Business District will provide a green-model for other BIDs, towns, and villages to follow. With our shared desire to make local areas and communities more sustainable and enjoyable for everyone, we look forward to working together, with local stakeholders, to drive the necessary change, as we continue our national journey to carbon neutrality by 2050.”

Project Manager for The Mary Robinson Centre, Susan Heffernan said:

‘The purpose of The Mary Robinson Centre is to drive change, inspiring individuals and communities to take the actions necessary at a local level to achieve the changes necessary at a global level to address the climate emergency.

The success of Ballina’s Green Town initiative, and now Sandyford BID’s sustainability initiatives, are important steps towards fostering the behaviour changes at local level. The Centre is committed to supporting these projects and collaborating with communities as they work to achieve carbon reduction.’

About The Mary Robinson Centre

The Mary Robinson Centre is a Centre for Change, located in Ballina, Co. Mayo in the childhood home of Ireland’s first female President. It will explore the key themes and issues surrounding the legacy of the influential world leader, with a specific focus on human rights in the broadest sense.

The Centre will open in Spring 2023.

The Mary Robinson Centre is developed in partnership with Mayo County Council, NUI Galway and the local community. Mary Robinson’s extensive personal archive and memorabilia, gifted to NUI Galway, will be displayed in the house she grew up in, in Ballina, Co. Mayo, which will become an educational outreach facility for NUI Galway in Mayo.

Ballina’s Green Town initiative is a community led sustainability initiative, supported by The Mary Robinson Centre, and seeks to make Ballina Ireland’s greenest town.

Gallery Sandyford Business District Innovation Summit 2022: Decarbonisation

The annual Sandyford Innovation Summit took place on Tuesday

27th and Wednesday 28th September 2022. The theme was “Decarbonisation” and its impact on businesses and the general public.

This year the 2-day event was staged in the newly renovated Pavilion at Leopardstown Racecourse. There was a live, conference element with presentations, firesides, and audience Q&A sessions.

There was also a significant exhibition element to proceedings, showcasing the best in sustainable transport options that are both currently available and in the pipeline.

Each day started with a practical demonstration of a last mile hub/mobility island concept (a pivotal part of SBD’s Project Green Plan), where visitors to the event got to sample ‘last mile green mobility’ first hand.

Attendees were asked to park in a designated car park over 1km from the event hall and use e-scooters, e-bikes and a ‘Green Bus’ provided by SBD to get to the venue.

The 2 day event also included test drives of EVs, e-bikes and e-scooters. The e-bike and e-scooter test rides took place on the road running alongside the race track itself

Gallery Sandyford Business District Pocket Forest Planting January 2022

On Saturday January 22nd 2022 we planted the 1st pocket forest in the district in Naomh Olafs GAA Club. We were delighted to be joined by An Cathaoirleach Cllr Lettie McCarthy and Minister Josepha Madigan T.D. and we were completely blown away by the number of volunteers who showed up early on a Saturday morning to help plant over 480 trees.

The pocket forest, a joint venture between Sandyford BID and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, is just one of the initiatives in our Project Green Campaign: Greening the Grey, which looks at implementing ways to transform Sandyford Business District’s environment into a more liveable, healthy space and plan for a smart sustainable future.

Speaking about the initiative, SBD Commercial Manager, Ger Corbett said “What was a few months in the making will hopefully be enjoyed by generations to come. It is great to have the first element of Project Green in the ground. We promised that our Innovation Week event on sustainability would be a springboard for action in Sandyford Business District and it was heart-warming to see all the volunteers on Saturday morning. Our thanks again to all of those who turned up, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for their support, An Cathaoirleach, Cllr Lettie McCarthy and Minister Josepha Madigan T.D. for getting involved and also Naomh Olaf GAA for the plot of land”

Keep an eye out for more of our Project Green initiatives coming soon.
